Following their highly acclaimed tour in 2023, renowned violinist Cathy Irons, together with Christchurch's esteemed jazz musicians, Dan Robertson (piano), Dougal Canard (double bass, guitar) and Doug Brush (drums) are all set to delight South Island audiences again.
Inspired by the vibrancy and versatility of the violin, the ensemble will perform music from haunting ancient melodies to pulsating Gypsy tunes, through lively folk numbers across to the syncopated rhythms of Brazil and the passion of Spanish-Argentinian tango, interspersed with popular swing, blues and Latin numbers by Miles Davis, Chick Corea and others.
Collectively named Douce Ambiance (literally Sweet Sounds"), Cathy and her fellow musicians are known for their incredible ability to switch effortlessly between different styles, eras and even instruments. Prepare to be enthralled by new sonic experiences with this multi-talented ensemble, where you can also savour the deep richness of the viola and the clear brilliance of acoustic guitar.
A regular Christchurch Symphony Orchestra first violinist and still true to her classical roots, Cathy Irons has redefined the violin for her audiences and rapidly gained a well-deserved reputation as an exceptional and expressive musician in multiple styles.
"Why do many of us limit the violin to only play classical music?" ask Cathy. "Across the globe, multiple cultures have embraced the violin for its unique expressive qualities and warm tone. My violin journey is a constant exploration. It's akin to discovering the unique personality of a child over time. It can speak in so many ways but whatever it plays, it always touches the heart."
